  15. DOCUMENT : ERRATA.TXT - This is the final errata information for the entire   
  16.                         Clementine EDR CD-ROM volume set (CL_0001 through     
  17.                         CL_0088). This final 'errata.txt' file exists only on 
  18.                         this final volume (CL_0088) and not on the first      
  19.                         volume as referenced in earlier 'errata.txt' files.   
  20.                                                                               
  21. This document is intended to provide an account of discovered errors or       
  22. anomalies associated with the Clementine CD-ROM volume set. Also, many of     
  23. the comments below are a clarification of potentially confusing issues that   
  24. are not necessarily errors or anomalies.

  27. followed by detailed comments related to specific volumes and orbits.

  47. SUPPLIED SOFTWARE                                                             
  48.   This CD volume (CL_0088) contains the most up-to-date software for the      
  49.   entire volume set. Earlier volumes may contain software errors (as          
  50.   documented in each volume's "errata.txt" file). Please use software from    
  51.   this final volume to ensure you are using the most up to data programs.     
  52.   This up-to-date software exists only on this final volume and not on the    
  53.   first volume as referenced in earlier volume's 'errata.txt' file. Further   
  54.   software updates may exist after the release of the Clementine data product.

  57.                                                                               
  58. Compressed EDR Image Files                                                    
  59.   A problem was discovered with the MINIMUM keyword value found in the        
  60.   labels of the image files. The MINIMUM value contains the minimum density   
  61.   number (DN) value of the image array. The value is not always correct.      
  62.   If the minimum value of the image array is located in the upper-left corner 
  63.   pixel of the array (row 1, column 1) then the minimum value is not properly 
  64.   reported. The MINIMUM value reported will be the next larger minimum value  
  65.   in the image array. The problem exists for all volumes in the archive.      
  66.                                                                               
  67. Compressed EDR Image Files                                                    
  68.   Inconsistencies may exist between the histogram statistics found in the     
  69.   image histogram object and the actual image that is decompressed on your    
  70.   computer platform. Subtle differences in the floating point hardware among  
  71.   computer platforms may cause the Density Number (DN) values of a resulting  
  72.   decompressed image to be occasionally different (within 1 DN) than the      
  73.   decompressed image used to generate the image histogram object. This        
  74.   problem exists for all volumes in the archive.                              
  75.                                                                               
  76. VOLDESC.CAT                                                                   
  77.   The VOLDESC.CAT file on some CD-ROM volumes may have records (lines) which  
  78.   are not 80 characters in length. This problem exists because the file was   
  79.   updated by hand to reflect the current volume number and orbits included on 
  80.   the volume. Because of the hand input some lines may not be 80 characters   
  81.   in length.                                                                  
  82.                                                                               
  83. RETICLE_POINT KEYWORDS DEFINITIONS                                            
  84.      The definitions in the "EDRSIS" documents have problems for the          
  85.      following keywords found in the labels of the Clementine images:         
  86.      RETICLE_POINT_RA, RETICLE_POINT_DECLINATION, RETICLE_POINT_LATITUDE,     
  87.      RETICLE_POINT_LONGITUDE. The part of the definition that describes       
  88.      the order in which the vector values are listed is incorrect. The        
  89.      ordering should be: "For the Clementine cameras the principal points are 
  90.      defined as the upper-left pixel of the camera (line 1, sample 1), the    
  91.      upper-right pixel (line 1, last sample), lower-right (last line, last    
  92.      sample), and the lower-left (last line, sample 1)".                      
  93.                                                                               
  94. FILE NAMING CONVENTION FOR STAR TRACKER A AND B CAMERAS                       
  95.      For EDRs associated with Star Tracker A and B cameras there is an        
  96.      inconsistency with the actual EDR filename and the file naming convention
  97.      as described in the EDRSIS and ARCSIS files found in the 'document'      
  98.      directory. For example, EDR laa0055u.137 is a Star Tracker A image       
  99.      and the third letter ('a') in the filename implies FILTER_NAME='A'.      
  100.      However, the header label for this image correctly has the entry         
  101.      FILTER_NAME='N/A'. This is the situation for all Star Tracker A and B    
  102.      images.                                                                  
  103.                                                                               
  104. FILE NAMING CONVENTION FOR IMAGES INDICATING FILTER_NAME='UNK'                
  105.      For EDRs where FILTER_NAME='UNK', the underscore (_) character is used   
  106.      as the third character (FILTER_NAME indicator) of the EDR filename. For  
  107.      example, EDR 'lh_5868y.188' has a FILTER_NAME='UNK' in the header label. 
  108.      For those EDRs with this situation, the 'UNK" value is used because the  
  109.      filter status is truly unknown due to missing or unavailable data.       
  110.                                                                               
  111. IMAGES WITH LARGE SMEAR_MAGNITUDE                                             
  112.      Images acquired at the beginning and end of each orbit may have a large  
  113.      SMEAR_MAGNITUDE (greater than 2.0 seconds) due to the slew maneuvering   
  114.      required to observe Vega, the Moon, and Earth.

  122.       other SPICE related keywords.  SPICE kernels are unavailable.           
  123.                                                                               
  124. CL_0002 - ORBIT 038 - INVALID UNK VALUES                                      
  125.       Image files lhf5054s.038 have "UNK" values for TARGET_NAME,             
  126.       RIGHT_ASCENSION, DECLINATION, and TWIST_ANGLE, and other SPICE related  
  127.       keywords.  SPICE kernels are unavailable.                               
  128.                                                                               
  129. CL_0003 - ORBIT 042 - INVALID UNK VALUES                                      
  130.       Image files lhf4735s.042, lhf4736s.042, lhf5390s.042 have "UNK" values  
  131.       for TARGET_NAME, RIGHT_ASCENSION, DECLINATION, and TWIST_ANGLE, and     
  132.       other SPICE related keywords.  SPICE kernels are unavailable.

  134. CL_0004 - ORBIT 043 - TEMPERATURE VALUES = "UNK"                              
  135.       Approximately 4253 images between sequence numbers 0803 and 5148        
  136.       contain a value of "UNK" (unknown) for FOCAL_PLANE_TEMPERATURE,         
  137.       LENS_TEMPERATURE, and/or CRYOCOOLER_TEMPERATURE. This does not          
  138.       necessarily include all images within this sequence range.              
  139.                                                                               
  140. CL_0005 - ORBIT 046 - TARGET_NAME = "SKY" DURING SYSTEMATIC MAPPING           
  141.       SKY images exist in directories reserved for images acquired            
  142.       during systematic lunar mapping. Image lla5529p.046 was acquired during 
  143.       slew maneuver for Earth observations and are not part of the systematic 
  144.       lunar observations.                                                     
  145.                                                                               
  146. CL_0005 - ORBIT 046 - TIME GAP BETWEEN FRAMES > 21 SECONDS                    
  147.       Time gap of ~29 seconds occurred starting at time 20:14:25.567 hours.   
  148.       Time gap exists between lla5523r.046 and lla5526p.046. End of slew -    
  149.       wait before imaging to allow s/c to settle.                             
  150.                                                                               
  151. CL_0005 - ORBIT 046 - TIME GAP BETWEEN FRAMES > 21 SECONDS                    
  152.       Time gap of ~68 seconds occurred starting at time 20:14:54.008 hours.

  251.       Images with frame sequence numbers 0124 - 0746 (all cameras, 623        
  252.       images total) have targets of SKY. Spacecraft started tumbling at       
  253.       19:51:00 hours and stablized at 20:02:00. Tumbling caused camera        
  254.       pointing to go off lunar target.

  256. CL_0015 - ORBIT 080 - LARGE FOCAL PLANE TEMPERATURE                           
  257.       Images between frame sequence numbers 0088 and 3863 may contain         
  258.       large values (greater than 400) for FOCAL_PLANE_TEMPERATURE. Cause      
  259.       unknown.                                                                
  260.                                                                               
  261. CL_0016 - ORBIT 081 - TIME GAP BETWEEN FRAMES > 21 SECONDS                    
  262.       During oblique viewing a time gap of ~24 seconds occurred starting      
  263.       at time 01:49:47 hours. Time gap exists between lhf5023p.081 and        
  264.       lhf5024p.081. Cause unknown.

  266. CL_0017 - ORBIT 085 - TARGET_NAME = "SKY" DURING SYSTEMATIC MAPPING           
  267.       SKY images exist in directories reserved for images acquired            
  268.       during systematic lunar mapping. Images lhd5746p.085 through            
  269.       lhd5752p.085 were acquired during slew maneuver for Vega star           
  270.       observations and are not part of the systematic lunar observations.

  288.       Spacecraft and instrumentation command activities resulted in a time    
  289.       gap of ~8 minutes between image acquisition. This gap occurred between  
  290.       images lhf5316o.094 and lue5317o.094 (during slew to Vega).

  338. CL_0029 - ORBIT 136 - LARGE FOCAL PLANE TEMPERATURE                           
  339.       Images between frame sequence numbers 0033 and 0053 may contain         
  340.       large values (greater than 400) for FOCAL_PLANE_TEMPERATURE. Cause      
  341.       unknown.                                                                
  342.                                                                               
  343. CL_0029 - ORBIT 136 - NIR IMAGES WITH LARGE CRYOCOOLER DURATION               
  344.       CRYOCOOLER_DURATION values (~15 hours) are assumed to be incorrect      
  345.       for NIR images for this orbit. True time lapses between revolutions     
  346.       make these large values inconsistent with durations recorded for the    
  347.       previous orbit.

  1876.       The data for these first lunar orbits may appear to contain a variety   
  1877.       of anomalies or errors. Many of these data anomalies may actually       
  1878.       reflect results of intentional tests. Some examples of these as well    
  1879.       as other information are:                                               
  1880.                                                                               
  1881.         CL_0081 - ORBITS 003 AND 004                                          
  1882.            The directory tree labeled for orbit 3 (lun003/...) actually       
  1883.            contains all image data for orbit 4. These orbit 4 images are also 
  1884.            named and labeled as orbit 3 data. The 'index/imgindx.tab' table   
  1885.            also reflects this inconsistency. There is no data for orbit 3.    
  1886.            The 'timeline/tllun004.xls' is the proper timeline file for this   
  1887.            orbit 4 data.                                                      
  1888.                                                                               
  1889.         DUPLICATE IMAGES                                                      
  1890.            A high percentage of duplicate images may occur for these          
  1891.            early orbits. This occurs in pairs where the first image is        
  1892.            uncompressed and the image immediately following is a compressed   
  1893.            version of the same data. For example, image lba0067y.001 and      
  1894.            lba0068y.001 are the same image data where lba0067y.001 is         
  1895.            uncompressed and lba0068y.001 is the compressed version of the     
  1896.            same data.                                                         
  1897.                                                                               
  1898.         All DNs ARE VALUE 255                                                 
  1899.            The image array for some imagery are all value 255.                
  1900.              (Note: Some images exist where most of the DN values             
  1901.               are saturated, however, a few pixels are not saturated.         
  1902.               For example, image lne0155p.001 contains 4 pixels with          
  1903.               value zero.)                                                    
  1904.                                                                               
  1905.         All DNs ARE VALUE 9 (ORBIT 001)                                       
  1906.            The image array are all value 9 for approximately 108 images.      
  1907.            This seems to occur on some images with FILTER_NAME='UNK". These   
  1908.            images have an underscore (_) in the third field of the filename.  
  1909.            For example, image lh_0076s.001 contains all 9's in the image      
  1910.            array. (A few of the images actually have a few DNs with value 10.)

  1912.         LARGE SMEAR MAGNITUDE (ORBIT 001)                                     
  1913.            Images between frame sequence numbers 0065 and 1149 may have large 
  1914.            SMEAR_MAGNITUDE values (greater than 2 seconds). Cause unknown.    
  1915.                                                                               
  1916.         TEMPERATURE VALUES = "UNK"                                            
  1917.            A high number of images contain a value of "UNK" (unknown) for     
  1918.            FOCAL_PLANE_TEMPERATURE, LENS_TEMPERATURE, and/or                  
  1919.            CRYOCOOLER_TEMPERATURE.                                            
  1920.                                                                               
  1921.         TIME GAP BETWEEN FRAMES > 21 SECONDS                                  
  1922.            Due to periodic "stop/start" of imaging, slew maneuvers, exposure  
  1923.            tests, long script durations, and other operations, time gaps of   
  1924.            several minutes occur between some image pairs.                    
  1925.                                                                               
  1926.         LARGE SMEAR MAGNITUDE (ORBIT 003)                                     
  1927.            Images between frame sequence numbers 0398 and 0423 may have large 
  1928.            SMEAR_MAGNITUDE values (greater than 2 seconds). Cause unknown.    
  1929.                                                                               
  1930.                                                                               
  1931.         All DNs ARE VALUE 23 (ORBIT 003)                                      
  1932.            The image array are all value 23 for approximately 184 images      
  1933.            throughout the orbit. (A few of the images actually have a few     
  1934.            DNs with value 22.)                                                
  1935.                                                                               
  1936.         IMAGE TIMESTAMP VALUES NOT CONSISTENT WITH TIMELINE (ORBIT 003)       
  1937.            The START_TIME values found in the image labels are not within     
  1938.            time ranges shown within the timeline files for this orbit         
  1939.            (Cause unknown).                                                   
  1940.                                                                               
  1941.         ALL DNs ARE VALUE 6 or 7 (ORBIT 017)                                  
  1942.            The image array for images lua0307i.017 and lua0559i.017 are       
  1943.            all value 6 or 7.                                                  
  1944.                                                                               
  1945.         LARGE SMEAR MAGNITUDE (ORBIT 024)                                     
  1946.            Image lnb0533b.024 and duplicate lnb0534b.024 have large           
  1947.            SMEAR_MAGNITUDE values (greater than 2 seconds). Slew maneuvers    
  1948.            are likely cause.

  1950.         LARGE SMEAR MAGNITUDE (ORBIT 026)                                     
  1951.            Images between frame sequence numbers 0661 and 0685 may have large
